Toidze Mose

Mose Toidze – Painter, graphic designer, People’s Artist of the USSR (1953), Academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1947), Professor of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts (1922), one of the founders of the new Georgian painting. He studied at the St. Petersburg Art Academy (on the recommendation of I. Repin, from 1896). He worked in Ilya Repin’s workshop in 1903-1904. He participated in the 31st spring exhibition of “Peredvizhniki” and the exhibition of the Society of Artists of the Caucasus. Ever since he was a student, after moving to Tbilisi, he actively cooperated with Georgian newpapers and magazines. In 1922, he founded a public art studio in Tbilisi, which he directed until 1930. Mose Toidze was one of those who laid the foundation for professional art education in Georgia. Artists such as Ucha Japaridze, Simon Virsaladze, K. Maralashvlili, K. Merabishvili, D. Kakabadze, K. Sanadze, architect G. Lezhava and others. Moses Toidze is considered one of the founders of modern Georgian painting. Toidze worked in almost all fields of fine arts. He worked productively in genre painting, historical, landscape, still life, portrait genres. An important theme of his work is the everyday life scenes and views of old Tbilisi.
