Toidze Mose

Mose Toidze – Painter, graphic artist, People’s Artist of the USSR, Academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, Professor of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts , one of the founders of the new Georgian painting. He studied at the St. Petersburg Art Academy, first at the Dimitriev-Kavkazski Art School with F. Maliyavin, then at the Academy of Arts in Repin’s workshop. His diploma thesis, Mtskhetoba, was awarded a gold medal.
In 1903-1904, he participated in the 31st spring exhibition of the Peredvizhniki and in the exhibition of the Society of Artists of the Caucasus. Since his student days, he collaborated with Georgian periodicals such as Kvali, Jejili, Nakaduli, Paskunji, Tsnobis Purtseli, and others.
His contributions to art education are notable. Mose Toidze was one of the pioneers of professional art education in Georgia. In 1922, he founded a public art studio in Tbilisi, which he headed until 1930. This studio produced prominent artists such as Ucha Japaridze, Simon Virsaladze, K. Maghalashvili, K. Merabishvili, D. Kakabadze, K. Sanadze, and others. From 1930 until the end of his life, he was a professor at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts.
Mose Toidze began his artistic career as a follower of the Repin school. His paintings incorporate trends from Russian and contemporary European painting, creatively transformed into multi-genre artistic works.
