Guruli Koba

Koba Guruli was a sculptor and engraver and one of the founders of modern Georgian metal engraving. An Honored Artist of Georgia, he graduated from the Tbilisi Academy of Art’s sculpture department in 1956. He is credited with introducing several new artistic and technical methods in Georgian metal engraving and creating a new way of framing his works.

He worked on both smaller and larger pieces, including a 26-meter-long, three-piece decorative panel titled Industry, Youth, Work for the 1967 Izmir World Exhibition. Among his notable artworks are People and Earth, a series on the life of Georgian farmers (1963–1974, in the artist’s family collection), a monument Avtantil Singing for the Tbilisi Musical Theatre (1965), a frieze for the Izmir World Exhibition (1965), and The Abduction of Medea.

The artist’s works are preserved in the Georgian National Gallery and numerous private collections.
