Dimitri Khahutashvili belongs to the generation of Georgian artists of the 1950s. He was born in 1927 in Tbilisi. In 1953, he graduated from the faculty of easel painting at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, where his teachers were notable representatives of Georgian art at that time: Mose Toidze, Ioseb Charlemani and others. Since 1960, he has been teaching at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. In 1986-2006, he was the head of the Department of Painting. Dimitri Khakhutashvili raised a number of successful and interesting artists, such as Radish Tordia, Beso Arbolishvili, Shalva Matuashvili (who was even his assistant) and many others. The creative heritage of Dimitri Khahutashvili, performed in various techniques and genres, is a valuable part in the history of Georgian painting. Individuality of his compositions, complex vision while creating battle scenes, emotional handwriting show an exceptionally thoughtful artist with refined taste and performance technique. He was constantly researching and experimenting. His field of interest as an artist is quite diverse. He has created works in realistic, impressionist, expressionist, cubist, surrealist styles. Mito Khakhutashvili has created more than 800 paintings and graphic works using different materials and techniques.
The artist had participated in many local and international exhibitions and has received numerous awards. In 1989 he was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Georgia, and in 1998 he received the Order of Honor. His works are preserved in Georgian National Museum, Zimmerli Art Museum of Rutgers University and others.
