Sculptor, Painter, Teacher, and Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi, he earned numerous honors and titles throughout his life. He was the honorary Artist of the Georgian SSR, a Full Member of the Academy of Arts of the Soviet Union, an Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, and a member of the Georgian Union of Artists.
In 1955, Merabishvili graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, majoring in sculpture. He began his teaching career there in 1961 and became a professor in 1978. His monumental sculptures are erected in Georgia, Russia, and Hungary, including: Tthe Alexander Griboedov monument (1961, Bronze, Tbilisi, First prize of the all-Union competition), the Equestrian monument of Erekle II (1972, Bronze, Telavi, First prize of the Republican competition), the monument to Dimitrov (1973, Bronze, Moscow, First prize of the All-Union competition), and the monument to General Petre Bagrationi in Tbilisi (1984, bronze). The Shota Rustaveli monument in Budapest (2011, Bronze), was created together with his father, Konstantine Merabishvili.
In addition to his contributions to public spaces in Tbilisi, Moscow, and Budapest, Merabishvili’s works are preserved in the Georgian National Museum.
