Mamaladze Shalva

Shalva Mamaladze, painter, graphic artist, cinema art director, studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1922-28. His teachers were G. Gabashvili, E. Lansere, Al. Tsimakuridze. In 1939-63, he taught at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. His works are preserved in Georgian National Museum and private collections.

The leading genre in Shalva Mamaladze’s work is the landscape, “nature is always beautiful, but just like the human face, it is very charming and convincing only in a certain position and point of view.” That’s why Shalva Mamaladze always chooses a specific place for his landscapes, a place that is well known and close to him (mostly his native Guria). The cameration of the emotionally written works of small format is explained by the concreteness of the place itself and the lyricism of the motif. Shalva Mamaladze’s moody landscapes are sometimes a little sad, but always alive and definitely inhabited by people, because of this, a special coziness is felt in them. The finished work with him often has the character of an etude, and the etude itself is like a picture, so detailed is the composition.
