Gia Gugushvili received his education from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and began his artistic career in the 1980s. He held the positions of Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Full Professor at Tbilisi State University, and Vice-Rector of the
Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. Gia Gugushvili was chosen to serve as the Rector of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 2014. When viewing his works, time is experienced ambiguously. Through precise visuals of lighted, colorful cars, gliding aircraft, helicopters, etc., direct human impressions are brought to life. But rather than actually “drawing” them, the artist only employs the language of painting to convey the impressions he had of them. Thus, the materiality of these images is gradually fading. The primary characteristic of Georgian painting is the tradition of developing a generalized artistic form from a particular origin. Gia Gugushvili adheres to this tradition while also masterfully incorporating the viewer into the creative process.
