Solo Exhibition of Nugzar Medzmariashvili

Nugzar Medzmariashvili’s solo exhibition opens at the National Gallery on 19 March 2026 at 6:00 PM. Bringing together works from different periods of the artist’s career, the exhibition traces the evolution of his visual language from traditional media to digital painting and graphic art.

Tbilisi is a central theme in the exhibition. The display also includes abstract compositions, portraits, and still lifes. Despite the variety of media, the works share a clear sense of form and space, as well as a sustained interest in colour, texture, and light.

Nugzar Medzmariashvili belongs to a generation of Georgian artists whose careers reflect the profound changes of successive eras. A graduate of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, he established himself as an important figure in Georgian monumental and decorative art with his 1970 diploma project. The Prometheus mosaic, created for the reading hall of the Georgian Academy of Sciences Library, was among the most significant monumental artworks of the period.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Medzmariashvili participated in national and international exhibitions in Budapest, Moscow, Paris, and Munich, while also completing major state commissions. These included Victory, a monumental panel created in dry encaustic for the Karishkhala Sports Complex; Night, a tapestry designed for the Pitsunda resort complex; and a mosaic icon of the Virgin Mary made for St Nino’s Spring in Bodbe convent.

Medzmariashvili taught at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and served as its Vice-Rector from 1987 to 1989. In 1982, he was awarded the title of Honoured Artist of Georgia.

In the 1990s, he became one of the first Georgian artists to embrace digital media. Computer graphics and digital painting enabled him to convey the experience of monumental art in a new visual format.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore the many periods and directions of Nugzar Medzmariashvili’s career, tracing his artistic journey from traditional media to the realm of pixels.
