In 1957, Vakhtang Oniani graduated from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, Faculty of Sculpture. In 1960-1961, he worked as a chief artist in Drosha magazine; In 1964-1980, he was the chief artist of the State Committee of the Printed Word. Among his outstanding works are: Sculpture – Petrified Tear, Svan Girl (both 1958), Mother of the Place (1967), Pillar of Knowledge (1981), Bust of Mikhail Khergiani, near the Khergiani House-Museum in Mestia; Graphics — Portrait of a Wife (1965), Red Clouds (1967) and others. Book illustration occupies a significant part of his heritage: he created exquisite design and drawings for the books of Georgian folk epics: Givargil, Amirani, Betkil, Ladler, Dali’s Kingdom. Since 1957, he has been participating in exhibitions organized in Tbilisi and many cities around the world; he designed the Georgian section at the Algiers International Fair (1967, awarded with a gold medal) and the Georgian Pavilion at the Izmir International Fair (1968). He is the author of several literature works, including: Golden Age, The Flight of White Swallows, etc.
