Avalishvili Bidzina

Bidzina Avalishvili was a sculptor and an honored artist of Georgia. The painter Ucha Japaridze famously used his face for the image of Besik Gabashvili.

He graduated from the Tbilisi Academy of Arts in 1947, studying sculpture under Iakob Nikoladze. Most of his creations are portrait sculptures, and he was the first Georgian sculptor to use wood for portraiture.

Throughout his life, he primarily created portraits of Georgian poets, writers, and public figures, such as Vaja Pshavela (1948, stone, Dusheti), Mirza Gelovani (1963, marble, Tianeti), Vasil Barnov (1967, marble, Koda), and Alexander Kazbegi (1947, wood). Additionally, he crafted two urban sculptures that adorn Tbilisi: one of the poet Akaki Tsereteli (1992, bronze, Tbilisi) and the other of the public figure Ekvtime Takaishvili (1993, bronze, Tbilisi).
