Gigo Gabashvili Art Imagnation and Reality

In the art of Gigo Gabashvili, the founder of Georgian realistic painting, there are artworks and photographs that confirm interest of the artist in modern European painting, particularly, in symbolism. This is the first time when the less known symbolist art of the artist is presented to the audience in such a large number.

In Gigo Gabashvili’s artistic world, presented at this exhibition, the reality and imagination are interconnected. The artist does not seek to imitate reality, but rather conveys his own spiritual mood with a free interpretation. He uses the symbols expressing emotions, and through these symbols and signs he wants to open an individual reality from the inside. This artistic world is the fruit of Gigo Gabashvili’s fantasy, visions, where his knowledge, imagination, religious views and mythology coexist. The artist’s aestheticism is sometimes esoteric, exotic, sometimes mysterious, imaginary, dreamy and fantastic. The artist uses real things and surroundings, shifts their meanings, and creates a new, fantastic world according his fantasy, where imagination and reality blend in.
