In 1910, he studied at the school of drawing and painting of Nikolai Sklifosovsky in Tbilisi under Boris Vogel and Boris Shebuev. After graduating from the Tbilisi Theological Seminary, he continued his studies first in Rostov, and then at the medical faculty of the Tbilisi University. For a short time he also studied at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. As he himself spoke, his fascination with art had been due to impression caused by the works of goldsmiths Beqa and Beshqen Opizaries.<\/p><p>The exceptional talent of Irakli Gamrekeli as a scenographer was revealed in his collaborations with Kote Mardjanishvili and his student Sandro Akhmeteli, the modernist directors of the Georgian and Russian theaters. In 1921, Gamrekeli showcased his watercolor illustrations at one of the exhibitions in Tbilisi. The works <em>Malaria<\/em> and <em>Danse Macabre<\/em> attracted the attention of Kote Mardjanishvili \u2013 the fact defined the future of the young artist: \u00a0Mardjanishvili invited him to design Oscar Wild\u2019s <em>Salome<\/em> at the Tbilisi New Theatre. Kirill Zdanevich wrote: <em>This is the first and completely justified attempt to pave the way for a young artist. The way that means the radical reform of the Georgian stage design. Further work and promotion of the artist in this direction depends on the leadership of the Georgian stage. We want them to completely abandon narrowly ethnic, traditional scenery. Let them move on to the\u00a0 state-of-the-art creation <\/em>(journal <em>Galaktion Tabidze<\/em>\u00a0N5, Tbilisi, 1923).<\/p><p>In 1922, Gamrekel designed Lope de Vega&#8217;s <em>Fuente Ovejuna<\/em> in Marjanishvili&#8217;s production at the Georgian Drama Theater (now Rustaveli Theater). In the following year, he became the theater\u2019s Art Director. \u00a0In parallel with working with Marjanishvili, the artist continued his fruitful collaboration with Sandro Akhmeteli, which lasted until Akhmeteli\u2019s forcing out from Tbilisi to Moscow.<\/p><p>\u00a0Gamrekeli is one of the founders of the Georgian leftist painting; He designed\u00a0 journals <em>H2SO4<\/em> (1924, a futuristic journal, a member of the editorial board of which he was) and <em>Leftism<\/em>. He also made the layout and illustrations for the\u00a0 books by Yona Vakeli, Grigol Robakidze, Simon Chikovani and others. (1926, 1927).<\/p><p>In 1928, together with the artist Valerian Sidamon-Eristavi, he worked as a production designer for the expressionist film <em>My Grandma<\/em> by Kote Mikaberidze which was banned for decades,<\/p><p>Despite the ban on the film screening, his cooperation with the Georgian Film studio did not stop. He designed\u00a0 sets and costumes for\u00a0 the Mikheil Chiaureli\u2019s<em> Arsena<\/em> and <em>Giorgi Saakadze<\/em><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>Though he was very prolific in film production design, theatre remained the main direction in his art. \u00a0He was a scenographer for almost all the epoch-making productions of that time.<em> Londa<\/em> by Grigol Robakidze (1922, director Kote Mardzhanishvili), <em>Lamara<\/em> (director Sandro Akhmetel, 1930) and <em>Maelstrem<\/em> (1923-24, director: Mardjanishvili) ; <em>Masse-Mensch<\/em> by Ernst Toller (1923, ); <em>Mirror-Man<\/em> by\u00a0 Franz Werfel, Shakespeare&#8217;s Hamlet (director Kote Marjanishvili, 1925, ); \u00a0<em>Zagmuk<\/em>, the opera performance after the play of Anatoli Glebov (1926); <em>The American Uncle<\/em> by\u00a0 Shiukashvili (1926); <em>Break Line<\/em> by Boris Lavrenyov (director Sandro Akhmeteli, 1928); <em>Anzori<\/em> by Sandro Shanshiashvili (director Sandro Akhmetel, 1928), <em>Businessman<\/em> by Walter Hasenklever (1929), <em>Tetnuldi<\/em> by Shalva Dadiani, (director Sandro Akhmetel, 1931), <em>The Robbers <\/em>by Friedrich Schiller (director Sandro Akhmetel, 1933)\u00a0 <em>Bogdan Khmelnizky<\/em> by Korneychuk (1940) <em>From the Spark<\/em> by Shalva Dadiana, (1937) <em>T<\/em><em>he Bride-to-be with the Poster<\/em> by Carlo Goldoni (1942) and others.<\/p><p>He staged performances at the Tbilisi Russian Drama Theater named after Alexander Griboedov, Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater, Maxim Gorky Leningrad Drama Theater, Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater.<\/p><p>In 1937, during the Decade of the Georgian Art in Moscow, his scenery and costumes for the \u00a0opera performance\u00a0 <em>Abesalom and Eteri<\/em> produced a sensation.<\/p><p>He died in Tbilisi in 1943 at the age of 49.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1a544de elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1a544de\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-extended\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5c456be sc_inner_width_none sc_content_align_inherit sc_layouts_column_icons_position_left\" data-id=\"5c456be\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17a14ea animation_type_block sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-image-gallery\" data-id=\"17a14ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image-gallery.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<style>\/*!
