SUMMARY:UCHA JAPARIDZE - 120
DESCRIPTION:UCHA JAPARIDZE – 120\nAnniversary Retrospective Exhibition\n \nOn 26 September 2026\, at 6:00 pm\, the Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery will open Ucha Japaridze 120\, an anniversary retrospective marking the 120th anniversary of the artist’s birth. \nUcha Japaridze (1906–1988) was one of the founders and leading figures of Socialist Realist painting in Georgia. His long artistic career was closely bound up with the cultural policies of the Soviet era and the artistic priorities they imposed. At the same time\, during the early years of his career\, Japaridze participated in the formation of modern Georgian painting. His early works reveal a clear dialogue with modernist tendencies\, a bold spirit of artistic inquiry\, and an interest in formal experimentation. \nSocialist Realism—the officially sanctioned artistic method of Soviet cultural policy—assigned art the task of constructing an idealized vision of Soviet society. Works of art thus became important vehicles for disseminating state ideology\, social values\, and historical narratives. Accordingly\, Socialist Realist art placed particular emphasis on collective labour\, social transformation\, heroism\, optimism\, and the formation of the “New Soviet Man.” \nIn Japaridze’s art\, the principles of Socialist Realism are evident both in his choice of subject matter and in his realist pictorial language. His diverse body of work encompasses compositions addressing historical and social themes\, depictions of labour\, portraits\, landscapes\, still lifes\, and genre scenes. \nHis long and prolific career was recognized with numerous state awards and honorary titles. \nYet Japaridze’s art cannot be reduced to an official ideological programme. Personal\, nostalgic\, and intimately familiar motifs occupy a distinctive place in his work: his native region of Racha and the village of Ghari\, rural life\, family members\, and people close to him. In his realist sketches\, studies\, and genre paintings\, each figure is rendered with a strong sense of individual character. The interplay between official artistic doctrine and personal experience forms one of the exhibition’s central themes. \nJaparidze received his early artistic training at the Oni School of Art and later studied in Tbilisi at Mose Toidze’s studio. In 1924\, he enrolled in the painting department of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. His encounters with Mose Toidze\, Lado Gudiashvili\, Davit Kakabadze\, Evgeny Lanceray\, Sandro Tsimakuridze\, and Aleksandre Bazhbeuk-Melikov left a significant mark on his early development. Japaridze subsequently emerged as a distinctive realist painter and remained committed to this artistic language throughout his life. \nThe exhibition brings together works from the collection of the Ucha Japaridze House Museum\, alongside paintings from the collections of the Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts\, the Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery\, and private lenders. \nThrough its broad selection and diversity of genres\, the exhibition offers visitors a fuller understanding of Japaridze’s artistic range and reveals how the official artistic demands of his time coexist in his work with the artist’s personal and intimate world. \nExhibition organizer: Ramaz JaparidzeCurators: Lika Giorgadze and Maia Chikvaidze \nSupported by: \nMinistry of Culture of GeorgiaCreative Georgia\, LEPLGeorgian National Museum

SUMMARY:Radish Tordia – 90
DESCRIPTION:On October 9\, 2026\, at 18:00\, the Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery hosted the opening of the retrospective exhibition “Radish Tordia – 90\,” dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the artist’s birth. \nRadish Tordia represents the generation of artists of the 1960s—the so-called “Sixties Generation.” This generation broke through the monotonous\, obligatory boundaries of Soviet Social Realism and brought about an aesthetic revolution in painting. The artist’s attitude toward reality shifted: instead of ideologically determined themes\, an individual vision came to the fore\, along with the independent value of pictorial medium and the desire to express national cultural memory through a modern artistic language. In this process\, Radish Tordia’s work stands out as a significant landmark marked by distinct individualism. \nIn 1956\, R. Tordia graduated from the I. Nikoladze Art School\, and in 1962\, from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (where he studied under V. Shukhaev\, U. Japaridze\, and S. Kobuladze). The experience he gained in the studio of S. Kobuladze played a particularly crucial role in shaping his artistic mindset. \nThe artist’s early works are characterized by a classical compositional structure. They clearly demonstrate a unique synthesis of European academic painting and medieval Georgian wall painting\, seen in works such as Dandelion (first version\, 1968)\, Portrait of the Mother\, Archaeologists (1969)\, and others. \nStarting from the 1970s\, a distinct transformation began in Radish Tordia’s art. The artist partially moved away from exaggerated forms and epic narratives to focus on more intimate\, personal works. His main focus shifted toward purely painterly exploration—linear elements gave way to color symbolism and pictorial experimentation. It was within these artistic and aesthetic quests that the central motif of Radish Tordia’s work was born: the image of a woman\, where delicacy\, bodily form\, and spiritual beauty unite through the language of painterly plasticism. In the late 1970s\, R. Tordia also created a monumental work: the mosaic panels for the “Technical University” metro station in Tbilisi. \nR. Tordia has participated in numerous international group and solo exhibitions and has received many local and international awards and prizes. The artist’s works are held in leading institutions in Georgia and around the world\, including the Georgian National Museum\, the Museum of Georgian Fine Arts\, the Adjara Art Museum\, Saint Petersburg museums\, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow\, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne\, and the Art Academy of Sardinia\, as well as in private collections across the USA\, the UK\, France\, Germany\, Japan\, Israel\, and other countries. \nAt the opening of the exhibition\, the catalog “Radish Tordia – 90\,” published with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Georgia\, was presented. \nThe exhibition will run until November 9\, 2026.
